Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction Spring 2011

“A rushing defenseman who can set up goals as well as score them” is how the write-up on the back of Bobby Orr’s rookie card ends off and the phenom from Parry Sound went on to do just that, over and over again, forging his legacy as hockey’s all-time greatest d-man. This example of Topps’ card number 35 from 1966-67 has been graded ENM 6 by KSA, with visible flaws being the two dinged right corners and wear on the two left ones. There’s also part of the border of another card visible down the right side. We prefer to focus on the brush-cut Orr, who lived up to expectations in his initial big-league campaign, winning the Calder Trophy as NHL rookie-of-the-year, thanks to a 13-goal, 41-point performance in 61 games. The kid had to stick up for himself too, and did just that, as his 102 penalty minutes attest. After that it was an eight-year run as the Norris Trophy winner as hockey’s top blueliner. Two scoring championships, two Stanley Cup-winning goals, two Conn Smythe Trophies, three Hart Trophies as league MVP – Bobby Orr did it all at top speed but all too quickly had to call it quits. What a gift to our sport and what a card to own – a Bobby Orr rookie!
