Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction Spring 2011

An unbelievable opportunity for rare hockey jersey collectors, this vintage New York Rangers wool sweater is the first jersey from the 1940 Stanley Cup championship era to have ever been offered for public auction! One of the very finest Rangers wool creations we have ever seen, this magnificent and vibrant number “17” Blueshirts beauty was originally obtained from a player who wishes to remain anonymous. Research on this wool sweater shows that this style, with white cuffs, square shoulder seams, and large felt letters sewn on the front, was worn by the Rangers during the 1940-41 season in the wake of Bryan Hextall’s overtime winner in the 1940 Stanley Cup final. This exquisite and historic wool treasure was likely a holdover from the Rangers’ season as defending Cup champions, which was used the following year. Very similar to what the Rangers wore when they claimed their third Stanley Cup in 1940, except for a few details, this blue wool creation features white-and-red bands on the sleeves and around the tail and white cuffs and crew-neck collar. The shocking blue-white-and-red colors of this historic Rangers game-worn sweater are truly a sight to behold. “Rangers” is spelled out in red-on-white double-felt letters sewn in the team’s signature cascading style on the front of the jersey. The large “17” sewn on the back are 10” tall numbers, also in red-and-white double-felt. Considering its rarity and appeal, you really couldn’t hope for a better example of a Rangers jersey from this era, with only a few holes to note, two of which were nicely stitched up after the fact, and insignificant stains that do not detract from this wool wonder’s display. A letter of authenticity from Classic Auctions will accompany this sensational and historic hockey treasure.
