Big M, as well as contract enthusiasts, will want to seriously consider this serious piece -- Frank Mahovlich’s rookie contract, signed May 13, 1957 after the future star from Timmins, Ontario completed his three years at St. Michael’s College in Toronto. The two-year deal agreed to by the Mahovlich and Maple Leaf clans called for Mahovlich to be paid $10,000 for each of the ’57-58 and ’58-59 seasons. The two-sided one-page NHL Standard Player’s Contract also reveals that “Player F. Mahovlich has received Two Thousand Dollars ($2,000.00) for signing this contract.” Wow, what a fantastic piece of Maple Leafs history! The 19-year-old’s blue ballpoint signature is below that of Howie Meeker’s on the back and above where Mahovlich added his Schumacher address, while NHL president Clarence Campbell signed boldly on the front. From the dawning of the career of one hockey’s greatest left wingers, this tantalizing treasure will come with an LOA from Classic.
