This fantastic junior hockey memento, presented to Stafford Smythe, is a vintage gold-and-diamond ring, which commemorates the great Toronto Marlboros teams of the mid-1950s. The son of Conn Smythe, Stafford (whose full name was Conn Stafford Smythe) coached the Marlies in the 1940s and was later promoted to managing director as the junior powerhouse won back-to-back Memorial Cup championships in the middle of the next decade. HOFer Bob Pulford, scoring leader Billy Harris and captain Mike Nykoluk led the Marlies to the Canadian junior hockey title in the spring of ‘55, the OHA champs defeating the Regina Pats in the finals for the first of two straight years. Coached by former Maple Leaf goaltender Turk Broda, members of the Marlies received gold-and-diamond keepsakes to commemorate their championship season. This marvelous ring, which comes directly from the Smythe family, features “MHC” (Marlboro Hockey Team) above the team logo (a crown and crossed hockey sticks), and a single diamond on the front, with coat of arms appearing on both sides. A nice scripted “C.S. Smythe 1954 1955” is engraved on the interior of the band, which also bears a “Birks 10K" stamp. This size-9 ring remains in beautiful condition. Its fine details are clearly on display with only minimal smoothing on the crests on the shanks to note, along with light scratches from wear that are not visible to the naked eye. This terrific treasure comes with a letter of authenticity signed by our consignor, a member of the Smythe family.
