Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction Spring 2011
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 6/21/2011
This sensational offering was available on November 2, 1937, when NHL stars gathered at the Montreal Forum to play a benefit memorial game following the untimely death the previous March of Canadiens’ legend Howie Morenz. A team of Montreal Canadiens and Maroons faced off against top talent from the rest of the league, with all proceeds going to the Morenz family. This highly desirable souvenir pairs a blue-tone pin-back button in astonishing difficult-to-hope-for-nicer condition with a 5-1/2” creamy ribbon picturing a classic full body shot of Howie in his Habs uniform. "To the Memory of Howie Morenz, 1902-1937" appears in French and English. A little ironing job is all that’s needed to enhance the display-ability of the ribbon, which has a light stain around Morenz’s name. By the way, the stars beat the Montrealers 6-5, with some $20,000 being raised.
