Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction Spring 2011

This towering trophy stands just over two feet high and as the title indicates, was presented to Aurele Joliat after he was deemed the Canadiens’ most valuable player in 1934-35 by, presumably, one of the team’s sponsors. Joliat had the previous season copped the Hart Trophy as NHL MVP and then scored 17 goals in ’34-35. Fancy engraving on the trophy is in French and reads: “Coupe Dupont Broadcasting Enrg. – Presentee au Joueur Le Plus Utile du Club de Hockey Canadien – 1934-35 – Gagne Par Aurele Joliat.” The trophy sits a tad crooked on its 5-1/2” high black-painted metal base, with the “Charbonneau” jeweler’s name visible underneath. Something, likely a figural hockey player, has gone missing from atop the removable lid. With scratches and tarnish, this one-of-one trophy is one cool relic!
