Nicknamed ``Mighty Mouse`` for the powerful performances pushed out of her diminutive 5`0`` frame, Elaine Tanner still reigns as one of Canada`s best ever athletes. 43 years have passed since Elaine Tanner won these medals - two silver, one bronze - at the 1968 Summer Olympics in Mexico but she still stands tall as the most successful Canadian female swimmer ever. The 1968 games marked many milestones for Canada and Elaine Tanner. She was the first Canadian, male or female, to earn three medals in the same Olympics. Previously, others had won medals over a span of Olympic appearances, but Tanner achieved the feat in one fell swoop. Tanner was also the first Canadian female swimmer to win an Olympic medal of any colour. She shared the wealth with teammates, leading them to a bronze medal in the 400m freestyle relay. That marked the first time Canadian women medalled in the event. Just 17 at the time, Tanner set a new Olympic record before medal competition had started. In the first qualifying race for the 100m backstroke and followed it up by breaking her own record in the second qualifying race. Canada only won five medals at the 1968 Summer Olympics, meaning Tanner was responsible for 60% of the medal haul. Tanner was a trail blazer for Canadian athletes and earned many honours during her career, including being named Canada`s top athlete in 1966 when she was only 15 - the youngest person ever to do so — and she was made an Officer of the Order of Canada in 1969. She was inducted into Canada`s Sports Hall of Fame in 1971. Like Tanner herself, the three medals pack a lot of punch in a small package. Set in a royal blue, velvet lined and gold framed case, the medals are in very good condition. The silver medal at the top of the display has some slight marks in the upper right section and on the clip that attaches the medal to the light blue ribbon. The ribbons are also in very good shape, save for some slight stains on the ones attached to the silver medals. Dive in to take advantage of this rare opportunity. Includes LOA from Elaine Tanner.
