A gifted goal scorer who played in two All-Star games, left winger Steve Payne wore this 1987-88 Minnesota North Stars gamer in his final NHL season. Payne made his North Stars debut in the fall of 1978 after he was chosen 19th overall in that spring’s draft. He scored at least 20 goals in each of his first seven seasons and had career highs, with 42 goals and 85 points in 1979-80. Payne followed up his impressive sophomore year with a stunning playoff run in 1981, when he scored 17 goals in 19 games, contributing 29 points as the North Stars made it to the Stanley Cup final, only to fall to the defending champion Islanders in five. Limited to 22 games in 1985-86 and 48 games the following season, he appeared in 9 games in 1987-88 before multiple cervical spine injuries forced him into retirement. After wearing #26 at the outset of his career, Payne switched to the number “44” that is sewn onto the back and both sleeves of his final North Stars game-worn jersey, which comes from his personal collection. A dried bloodstain on the upper right sleeve, a lighter bloodstain on the right breast, a horizontal slash mark on one side of the North Stars crest and a very small mark below it on the front offer best evidence of use on this gamer, which obviously saw limited use. A Maska fly tag in the neck has size “52” written on it in blue ballpoint. The fight strap is whole and intact. Comes with Steve Payne’s signed letter of authenticity.
