Late 19th century and early 20th century scenes from the Montreal Winter Carnival are depicted in this lot of vintage newspapers and postcards from the 1885 and 1909 editions of the city's famous outdoor celebration. An early hockey scene is featured on one postcard in a set of 10 Canadian Winter Sports cards from the 1909 Montreal carnival which remain in excellent-plus condition and come with their original envelope. The "Canadian Winter Sports Number" published by The Standard and dated Montreal, February 1909 features an illustration titled "The Storming of the Ice Palace, 1909" on the cover. This complete, 24-page magazine newspaper supplement features an early hockey scene from Montreal's Victoria Rink and the carnival schedule, including hockey games featuring the Shamrocks, Wanderers and Ottawa. Also included is an issue of the 1885 "Carnival Number" of The Montreal Daily Star with detached pages and frayed edges. An illustration of a fantastic winter scene of an outdoorsman being pulled along the snow by a tandem of horses is featured on the cover of this 26-page special section which features a number of magnificent Canadian winter scene illustrations.
