Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction June 2010

Outstanding vintage red woolen sweater, this example possible worn by Valeri Nikitin, dates back to the time when the Russians were beginning to make a splash here in western hockey circles. Nikitin saw action on the National team in both the 1967 and 1970 World Championship tournaments. The heavy tie-neck style, with that classic split-hem design displays the felt CCCP at the chest with felt and sheen knit numerals on the back. Crude single-layer arm numbers can be found just below each shoulder, crafted in a leather-like material and affixed with a single row of stitchwork. Game wear is evident and includes stick marks on the arms with about no less than fourteen darned team repairs. Attributed to Nikitin, our research shows us that the sweater is correct for the style worn by him in 1970 at the World Ice Hockey Championships. Obtained by a Swedish hockey dignitary following the games of the 1970 World Hockey Championships held in Stockholm, Sweden. Classic!
