Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction June 2010
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 6/22/2010
A tantalizing, gasp-provoking offering here with these very scarce cards featuring various athletes who were prominent in Canada in the 1920s and available in packages of confectionery, notably chocolate bars, manufactured by the Dominion Chocolate company. The bottom part of each card could be cut off and full sets of the little coupons could be redeemed for prizes like a hockey puck, football, baseball glove, hockey stick, etc., rendering cards still with coupons mighty scarce. Led by 11 hockey players, including Ken Doraty and Dunc Munro, members of the Toronto Millionaires, the cards here are mostly crease-free EX+, EX-MT and NRMT beauties. Later a Toronto Maple Leaf, Doraty is best known for ending one of the longest games in NHL history with an overtime goal in the sixth overtime period in the 1933 semi-finals against Boston. Also included is Al. Gauthier, who helps determine that this "new" series of 60 cards was actually released during the 1928-29 season and not back in 1926 as had previously been thought. We can spot but seven creased cards and approximately a dozen that don't make it to EX-or-better. Sprinter and Olympic champion Percy Williams (EX-MT) is another prominent athlete, with the rest coming from the world of track & field, golf, boxing, rowing, speed skating and other sports. Missing to complete the terrific ensemble is hockey player Don Cameron (#25). Hardcore vintage collectors will want to seriously consider this truly fantastic find which is worthy of a Hall of Fame sports card portfolio.
