We had to do a little bit of detective work on this Russ Courtnall gamer from his first days with the Minnesota North Stars. While the jersey features the NHL 75th anniversary patch on the right breast, along with the North Stars’ 25th anniversary crest on the left shoulder, it can’t possibly have been worn by Courtnall in 1991-92 because he spent the entire season with the Montreal Canadiens. Traded to Minnesota on August 31, 1992, in the deal that sent Brian Bellows to the Habs, Courtnall had to have worn this road jersey during preseason games with the North Stars that fall. An action photo from Courtnall’s bio in Minnesota’s 1992 yearbook shows him wearing the white version of this same jersey, complete with the NHL 75th anniversary and Minnesota 25th anniversary patches. Sloppy stitching on nameplate that looks like a rush job is further evidence. While this is a knit jersey, the North Stars wore mesh jerseys during the 1992-93 regular season. The fight strap is signed in black marker by Courtnall along with his No. 26. The jersey has a Steichens neck tag, and Maska and size 52 fly tags sewn over by black nameplate thread.
