Serious autograph enthusiasts will want to consider this intriguing offering, but first a little hockey history lesson is in order! The 10th Earl of Cavans given name was Frederick Rudolph Lambart who, in the late 1800s was Lord Kilcoursie, an aid to Canadas Governor General, Frederick Arthur Stanley, and also a member of the Ottawa Rideau Rebels hockey team. It is said that Kilcoursie was the one who pointed out to Stanley that teams were simply playing for fun, and it was Kilcoursie who read Lord Stanleys message at a dinner for the Ottawa Athletic Association in March of 1892, announcing the donation of a special hockey trophy which later became known as the Stanley Cup. Part of the allocation went like this: I have for some time been thinking that it would be a good thing if there were a challenge cup which should be held from year to year by the champion hockey team of the Dominion (Canada). Kilcoursie later returned to England and succeeded his father as 10th Earl of Cavan in 1900, helping date this fountain pen Cavan signature. A remarkable find!
