The distinctive appearance of this 1970s youth goalie mask clearly looks like the work of Ernie Higgins. The Massachusetts maskmaker made his mark with fiberglass face protectors he produced for Bruins goalies Gerry Cheevers and Eddie Johnston. Higgins also made memorable custom masks for Eddie Giacomin, Rogie Vachon and Doug Favell. This beauty looks very similar to a Gilles Gilbert creation by Higgins that featured a similar pattern of black stars added across the top of the mask. This unique mask is sized for a youth and features extended flaps on each side for full ear protection. The mask has no interior padding or straps, though it features great wear with plenty of marks, including some fantastic red paint transfer. The fibreglass strips that make up the base of the protection are visible on parts of the interior. An outstanding collectors item, this wonderful mask featured a true innovation with its increased ear protection, a standard that was readily adopted by the mask-making fraternity in the years that followed.
