From humble NHL beginnings with the ill-fated New York Americans at the outset of the 1940s, Chuck Rayner’s star rose when he joined the New York Rangers after serving three years in the Royal Canadian Navy during World War II. “Bonnie Prince Charlie” claimed the Hart Trophy as the league’s MVP in 1950, when he led the Rangers to the seventh game of the Stanley Cup final, only to lose to Detroit in overtime. Rayner, who was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 1973 and died in 2002, has indicated that he signed his personalized autograph artist Carleton “Mac” McDiarmid’s original portrait of himself in Winnipeg on July 4, 1977. In addition to the location and the date, he has signed, “Best wishes Mac, Chuck Rayner N.Y. Americans 1940-42, N.Y. Rangers 1945-1954, Hart Trophy 1950” in the upper left corner of the colorful portrait that features Rayner in his blue Rangers sweater and red pants, with goal netting in the background under his right arm. Signed “Mac” by the artist, the painting is done on 15 ½” x 13” professional illustration board, and mounted in a grey matte and presented in a 20” x 16” silver-colored metal frame.
