Red Wings great Sid Abel won his first of three Stanley Cups with Detroit in 1943. After missing two seasons due to military service, he returned to the NHL and went on to center the Production Line, adding two more Cups in 1950 and 1952 while flanked by fellow Hall-of-Famers Gordie Howe and Ted Lindsay. Abel has signed simply, “To Mac – Very Best Wishes – Sid Abel”, the bottom part of this incredible likeness of himself, an original painting by Carleton “Mac” McDiarmid. This vibrant painting, signed “Mac” by the artist, illustrates Abel kicking up a snow shower as he slams on the brakes while fixing his gaze directly at the viewer. Painted on 15 ½” x 13” professional illustration board, this unique autographed portrait is mounted in a grey matte and presented in a stylish 20” x 16” silver-colored metal frame. Traded to Chicago in the summer of 1952, Abel served as the Black Hawks’ playing coach for two seasons, beginning a career move behind the bench that saw him go on to lead the Red Wings to four Stanley Cup finals appearances in the 1960s. Inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 1969, Abel passed away on February 8, 2000.
