The absolutely sensational cornerstone and tantalizing highlight of longtime hockey collector Carleton McDiarmid's exceptional collection, this almost unheard of complete set of Sweet Caporal postcards will render its new owner extremely proud and content. To our knowledge the only complete set ever offered for public auction, each one of these encapsulated gems is stirring to hold and admire while imagining the pre-NHL days when teams like the Renfrew Millionaires, Quebec Bulldogs, Ottawa Senators, Montreal Wanderers and the then recently formed Montreal Canadiens did battle.Serious vintage card enthusiasts are aware of how seldom even one or a few of these Sweet Caporal issues are found or become available, thus we know how equally excited you are to read on about the captivating graded details.Remarkably, 33 of the 45 postcards have been graded EX-5 or better by the SGC grading firm, including the highly coveted Georges Vezina card which leads a group of (16) EX/NM-6 jewels.Arguably the two greatest skaters of the era, "Cyclone" Taylor and "Newsy" Lalonde also survived in EX/NM-6 condition, as did numbers 11 (Walsh), 13, 19, 23, 24 (S. Cleghorn), 27, 29, 30, 32, 33, 34, 40 and 41 (Pitre).Next up are half a dozen "EX+ 5.5" postcards; numbers 10, 12, 21, 22, 37 and 39.Another of the key cards in the set, picturing the legendary Art Ross in his Montreal Wanderers turtleneck sweater, leads a group of 11 cards which came in at EX-5.Others are numbers 9, 14, 18, 25 (O. Cleghorn), 26, 28 (E. Johnson), 35 (E. Russell), 36, 43 and 44.Ottawa Senators and Hall-of-Famers Bruce Stuart (#15) and Jack Darragh (#17) received VG/EX-4 grades, while eight cards are VG-3.Featured in the latter group are Joe Hall, Joe Malone, Percy Lesueur and Jack Laviolette, as well as numbers 3, 5, 6 and 8.There are but just two less-than-VG cards present; card #1 (Paddy Moran) is "Poor-1", notably because of a punch hole and #7 which is "Fair-1.5."These soon-to-be 100-year old treasures are the jackpot that numerous serious card collectors and historians have dreamt of one day owning.Representing a stirring opportunity and a chance of a lifetime, the collection, like we eluded to at the top, will give the fortunate high bidder a wonderful sense of pride and joy. Please feel free to call to discuss this monumental event.
