An image that prompts the beholder to look and look and look at it, is that of Didier Pitre, one of the Montreal Canadiens first star players, albeit somewhat of a lesser known ice king. Born in Valleyfield, Pitre was the first player signed by Jack Laviolette when the latter formed the Canadiens in 1909 and was the idol of French-Canadian hockey followers, possessing tremendous speed for a big man, tipping the scales in the neighborhood of 200 pounds. Originally a defenceman, Pitre later played right wing on a line with Laviolette and Newsy Lalonde and helped the Habs to their first Stanley Cup in 1915-16. He averaged better than a goal a game in the NHA, scoring 30 in 20 games in 1914-15 and 24 in 24 games during the 1915-16 championship season. This stirring 7-1/2 by 9-1/2 matte-finish photo is dated 1916 on the back, with the crystal-clear photography giving a fascinating look at Didiers well-used uniform and equipment. Safety pins to hold up the socks are even visible! This excellent condition treasure is free of any creases and oh so incredibly captivating.
