A fantastic find is this terrific little treasure that recalls the untimely death of Montreal Canadiens legend Howie Morenz. Appearing on the blade of the 15 long wooden stick is In Memory of The Late Howie Morenz Died March 8th, 1937. Hockey historians are well aware of the Morenz story, but for the uninformed, Howie suffered a career-ending broken leg in a game inlate-January and died in hospital five weeks later from an embolism. Morenzs body lay in state at center ice of the Montreal Forum where thousands and thousands streamed by to pay their last respects to an icon who had entertained and delighted them with his incomparable hockey talent. Although there is no game-action footage that shows Morenz for more than a few seconds, reports praising his prowess lead us to imagine his extraordinary exploits. Many people of an older generation swear that Morenz was the greatest of them all, greater even than Orr, Howe or Gretzky. We historians could spend hours contemplating Howies greatness! The provenance of this little stick, with its black tape near the butt end, also leaves us wondering. Weve never handled one before and are questioning how/when/where it would have been made available. Is it something that would have been sold at the Morenz memorial game? You would think there would have been more to survive. At any rate, its a rarity that deserves a special place in a special Morenz/Canadiens shrine.
