Slovakian prospect Jozef Balej’s greatest contribution to the Montreal Canadiens was as the asset dealt by the team to the New York Rangers in return for star right wing Alexei Kovalev. Chosen 78th overall by the Habs in the third round of the 2000 draft, Balej failed to record a point in four games while wearing No. 76 with Montreal in 2003-04 before he was traded to the Blueshirts. He had a goal and four assists in 13 more games that season with New York. Balej, who added one assist in his only other NHL game with Vancouver in 2005-06, is currently playing in Europe. This fantastic preseason gamer was clearly recycled, almost certainly game worn by Brian Savage as evidenced by the removal of a slightly longer nameplate and an alternate captain’s “A” on the left breast of this 1998 No. 49 jersey. Talk about hammered, among the numerous team repairs throughout the jersey is three-inch diagonal repair on the bottom left front of the jersey. The “CH” crest, featuring red and blue tackle twill and white embroidery, has a number of slash marks and there are a number of slashing cuts on the right side of the jersey beside the crest. The stitching at the front of the v-neck collar has let go, there is a great stick mark on the left side of the back of the jersey near the sleeve, and both elbows have boards burns, stick marks and holes galore, particularly the left sleeve. The laundry tag inside the right seam and the fight strap are intact, and a size 56-R tag remains sewn inside the left tail. The Starter tag is sewn into the neck and the company’s logo is embroidered onto the tail, along with the NHL logo. Comes with a letter of authenticity from the Canadiens signed by Rejean Houle.
