Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction Winter 2020
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 2/26/2020
A scarce representative of the short-lived Southern Hockey League which served as an affiliate of the WHA, this Roanoke Valley Rebels hockey jersey saw action during the club’s three seasons in the SHL, from 1973 to 1976. A small label from Champion with “46” sizing is affixed to the collar, with no other tagging present. Styled with all identifiers rubberized including the attractively-designed team crest, numbers and striping bands, no nameplate was ever affixed to the sweater, with a skate lace and quarter used for a makeshift fight strap. Exhibiting a large stick mark over the front, the jersey remains in beautiful condition, with just a bit of red and blue paint transfer visible in spots. The Rebels would win the SHL’s inaugural championship, in 1973-74. Addendum; The jersey is from the 1975-76 season and the #27 was worn briefly by Mike Rouleau and may have been worn by other players. The Rebels were the first team in the Southern Hockey League (and one of the first professional teams anywhere) to wear mesh jerseys.
