Named Canada's top male athlete of the half-century in 1950, Lionel Conacher excelled in virtually every sport he took part in. Aptly named "the Big Train," the 6', 195-pound Conacher was a proficient NHL skater. He normally played left defense and was best known for his imposing physical presence, leadership skills and rock-solid play in his own zone. Autos along one side of the shaft included those of Bob Gracie, Gus Marker, Bill Beveridge, Allan Shields, Joe Lamb, Jimmy Ward, Dave Trottier, Stew Evans, Cy Wentworth, Bill Miller, Hooley Smith, Russ Blinco, Baldy Northcott. The opposite side sports the vintage ink marks of Lionel Conacher, Tommy Gorman (manager-coach), Bill Touhey and two others. The ancient game-used stick has Conacher's #3 stamped high up on the shaft and the font and size of the numeral matches with a photo, a digital image of which we will include with the lot. A few strips of the original tape on the blade is missing but the lion's share is intact and a section of newer tape over the knob's tape job which has been removed. Black stick marks and slashes decorate the shaft and the blade shows significant wear along the bottom but no signs of damage or cracking. A monstrous find in this super-scarce stick, wielded by a Hall-of-Fame NHL'er who won back-to-back Stanley Cups with the Chicago Black Hawks in 1934 and the Montreal Maroons in 1935!
