We're extremely excited to offer the hobby this remarkable 1964 Olympic hockey bronze medal won by one of Czechoslovakian hockey's all-time greats! From the personal collection of Josef Cerny comes his Olympic bronze medal, complete with its original red and white ribbon and Innsbruck 1964 presentation box. Cerny, who was inducted into the IIHF Hall of Fame in 2007, was among the tournament's leading scorers in the first Olympics hosted by Austria. The Czechoslovakian forward had five goals and five assists in seven games in Innsbruck to tie teammate Jiri Dolana for the team lead with 10 points, just one point behind 1964 Olympic leaders Sven Tumba and Ulf Sterner of Sweden. While the Soviets were a perfect 7-0 to claim gold, Czechoslovakia went 5-2 to finish in a three-way tie with Sweden and Canada, who had identical records for 10 points. The Swedes claimed silver on the basis of goal differential with Czechoslovakia gaining the bronze over Canada.
Cerny's first of three Olympic medals has been stored for decades in its original cream velvet-lined brown leather box, which has warped yet still closes when fastened shut. The Innsbruck 1964 logo featuring the five Olympic rings sits in the centre of one side of the medal surrounded by IX Olympic Winter Games in German. "Innsbruck 1964" is spelled out in modern lettering above a stylized rendition of the Alps with "Eishockey" (ice hockey, in German) along the bottom. The gilded Innsbruck 1964 Olympic logo is printed on the top of the medal case's lid. Approaching 50 years old, this rare Innsbruck bronze medal remains in glorious condition overall, with its ribbon complete and whole and what appears to be cleanable residue in the lettering and Olympic rings on the logo side. Killer keepsake will be accompanied by Josef Cerny's signed LOA.
