Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction Fall 2017

Originally based in Boston, the New England Whalers began life in the WHA in 1972, transitioning to Connecticut and Hartford in 1974 five years before their entry into the NHL in 1979. We have a desirable Whalers alternate captain’s jersey worn by Jim Dorey that originates from the inaugural season in 1972-73, when the club was crowned as Avco Cup champions. Labeling from Gerry Cosby sits along the collar, with a laundering tag and size “50” swatch. Featuring an attractive Whalers team crest with embroidered detailing, the durene V-neck has been accented with tackle twill alternate’s “A”, sleeve and verso numbers, with matching Pucky the Whale crests over each shoulder. A second clasp-style fight strap has also been added, mounted to the interior just above the reverse numbers. An LOA from the Dorey family will accompany.
Game-wear on the inaugural season garment includes some marks and burns, with some moderate pilling to the interior present. There is also some paint transfer over the right sleeve’s number, with team repairs visible across the lower front band and left sleeve. When the New England Whalers won the league's inaugural championship in 1973 the trophy had not yet been completed, and the Whalers were forced to "skate" their divisional championship trophy around the ice surface, much to the embarrassment of the WHA office.
