The Jean Beliveau Auction- February 2005
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 2/22/2005
After being an important part of 8 teams which finished in first place in the old 6-team NHL and two more which finished atop the East Division in the first two years of expansion, Jean Beliveau moved upstairs at the Montreal Forum and took over the role of Vice-President and Director of Corporate Affairs. This is the miniature Prince of Wales Trophy he was presented with after the Canadiens once again led the east in ‘72-73 thanks to a 52-win, 120 point season. A potent offense (the Habs' 329 goals were just one shy of league-leading Boston) combined with a great defence (Ken Dryden won his first Vezina trophy as the Canadiens surrendered just 2.36 goals a game) gave Montreal a 13-point edge on the defending Stanley Cup champion Bruins. Offensive leaders Jacques Lemaire (95 points) and Frank Mahovlich (93) respectively finished 5th and 9th in league scoring before the Canadiens recaptured the Stanley Cup in the spring. This keepsake from that memorable season has been preserved in outstanding near mint condition. Four hockey sticks rise up from the wooden base and support a silver-plated cup with lid. An engraved metal plate on one side of base reads "NHL Champions - 1972-73 - Club De Hockey Canadiens" while the opposite side's inscription includes the name of the trophy and "Jean Beliveau V.P." Wonderful memento was obtained from Jean Beliveau and will be accompanied by his signed LOA.
