The Jacques Laperriere Auction - Fall 2008
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 10/21/2008
After a serious knee injury ended his playing career in 1974, Jacques Laperriere soon turned to coaching. The future Hall of Fame defenceman coached junior hockey in Montreal for two seasons before joining the Canadiens as an assistant coach in 1980. Laperriere was on hand when coach Jacques Lemaire’s team made a surprising run in the 1984 playoffs with rookie goalie Steve Penney, winning the first two games of the conference final before losing the next four to the New York Islanders. Another rookie goalie would take the spotlight two years later as Patrick Roy backstopped the Canadiens to their first Cup in seven years under rookie head coach Jean Perron. The Habs beat Boston, Hartford, the New York Rangers and Calgary with a roster that grouped veterans such as Gainey, Robinson, Tremblay, Smith, Green, Naslund, Walter, Carbonneau, Chelios, Nilan, Ludwig, DeBlois, Gingras and Boisvert with newcomers Skrudland, McPhee, Lemieux, Richer, Dahlin, Svoboda, Kurvers, Rooney, Maley, Kordic, Lalor, Momesso and Bucyk. This 13” tall trophy produced by Boffey is the original that was presented to Laperriere by the NHL. Laperriere, who was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 1987, has signed the green felt bottom of the black wood base of the trophy. This fantastic collectors’ item from the Canadiens’ 1986 Stanley Cup win comes with Jacques Laperriere’s signed letter of authenticity.
