The 2009 Montreal Centennial Auction
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 2/24/2009
Turn-of-the-century uniform from the Montreal Amateur Athletic Association, Canada's oldest athletic association, located in Montreal, Quebec, Canada. In the late-1800s and early-1900s, the MAAA was one of the most important sporting institutions in Canada and across North America, with its teams winning ice hockey's first Stanley Cup in 1893 and again in 1894, 1902 and 1903 in addition to Canadian football's Grey Cup. This ancient coarse wool athletic top likely worn by a runner or summer sport athlete is a tank-top style measuring approximately 15 inches across the chest (size 30). Stunning felt crest on the chest with the orange winged-wheel MAAA logo on a cream shield with red and blue diagonal striping. The blue and wine-colored uniform is bare of any tagging and has been well-preserved with only a handful of smaller holes that do not detract from its appearance in any way. This is the first Montreal AAA uniform we have seen in any style and it will make a wonderful display.
