Item description
A significant and desirable pre-war hockey card set issued by the William Paterson company of Brantford, Ontario and included with every “Paterson Hockey Bar” during the 1923-24 season, this set of 39 cards is in overall “VG” condition and will even come with an original and seldom-seen wrapper! The back of the “VG” wrapper details how a pair of hockey skates will be sent to those who send the company a complete set of 40 cards. Not wishing to award too many pairs of skates, the company produced very limited quantities of one card (#25 – Bert Corbeau) and thus created one of the rarest and most sought cards in the hobby. The near impossible to find Corbeau card is not present here, but oh, what a line-up of all-time greats! Leading the way are the rookie cards of Canadiens’ legends Howie Morenz and Aurele Joliat, Clancy, Nighbor, Denneny, Adams and Dye, along with cards of Vezina, Benedict, Malone and the Cleghorn brothers. The key Morenz card is in solid crease-free “VG” condition with really only slightly rounded corners to mention. In fact, close to 80% of the cards (31)grade “VG” with very few creases to note. The exceptions are the Vezina (“G-VG” with rounded corners and a somewhat “grubby” front), similar Benedict and Nighbor cards, “G-VG” examples of cards 1, 18, 26, and 35, and a “P-F” #4 card. There are also two duplicates that will be included, “G-VG” cards of Nighbor and #32, Goldie Prodgers. Thought-provoking and tempting lot for pre-war enthusiasts to consider!
