Wicked story to go along with this formidable stick, passed down through three generations of Canadiens-lovers. Our consignor's grandfather received the lumber from a Montreal Canadiens equipment man, a friend who had told him that he would one day get him one of Maurice Richard's sticks. The promise came through after the grandfather had witnessed the Rocket score five goals and three assists in a 9-1 drubbing of the Red Wings, a game played December 28, 1944, at the Montreal Forum. The stick has "CANADIEN" stamped on one side of the shaft, while details of the Rocket's exploits were added in pencil to the other side, where a "M. Richard" signature appears, also in pencil. Original black tape covers the blade, which exhibits a couple of time cracks at the tip, while black knob tape was removed from the butt end at some point. A scripted "Left" is stamped on the front of the shaft. It's debatable as to whether this is the actual stick Richard used during his record-setting night, but that possibility is fascinating. This was the season that Maurice set the goal-scoring standard, potting 50 in 50 games. Stick has been kept with pride for over 60 years and remains in excellent condition.
