Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction June 2018
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 6/19/2018
Spot-on gamer from the mid-Nineties has the correct “Jack the Gripper” handle, Easton 5100 Aluminum shaft and wood blade stamped “Gretzky” with Easton logos on both sides. Blade taping has been removed for an outstanding Wayne Gretzky signature in bold black marker. The stick shows a few marks on the shaft with more blade contact marks and evidence of a former tape job. The lack of a trainer’s code on the butt end and the consignor’s “2 29 96 prac” notation suggests this was obtained at a practice. This stick has been specially customized with a code written on the butt end and a small hologram sticker added by our consignor.
There are examples of Wayne’s Easton-era practice sticks in the hobby as it was typical of the Great One to hand out a stick to a kid or a team staffer after a practice session or earlier on game day. However, Wayne’s sticks designated for use in a game would customarily be coded on the knob end by Kings’ equipment man Peter Millar.
