Referred to affectionately as the Chicoutimi Cucumber for his cool composure between the pipes, Georges Vezina first guarded the Montreal Canadiens net during the club’s second season of existence in 1910, with his unbroken string of 328 consecutive regular-season contests helping to cement his legend. Diagnosed with tuberculosis after leaving a game due to illness in 1925, Vezina would sadly pass on March 27th 1926. The first of its kind we have ever seen or handled, we have an exceptionally rare memorial card issued for the iconic netminder, with this example encapsulated by SGC and graded “A” for authentic. The perfect accompaniment to any C55 Vezina rookie, the approx 2 ½” x 4” card features a youthful cameo image of the superstar, with the text beneath in French listing the date of his passing, with a prayer in French over the verso.
The card appears to be slightly trimmed or possibly hand-cut, with uneven edges, with no actual loss as the black border is visible along most of the circumference. Light to moderate toning has taken place understandably, with a few creases present along with tiny areas of paper loss. There is also a small stain near the left border along with a small indentation just above. We should also note wear including a few scratches to the SGC case as well.
