Extremely desirable to vintage photo collectors, the work of noted lensman David Bier spans almost half a century, with any and all prints and negatives produced by the photographer highly prized. We have a large collection of mostly Habs photos from the 1950s to 1970s totaling over 375, with numerous Bier images present. Included, we have 28 photos of Maurice Richard (4 oversized), 15 photos of Jean Beliveau (7 oversized), 12 oversized photos circa mid-to-late 1960s (most on cardboard backing), 15 oversized player photos circa 1950s-1970s (5 of earlier players), 13 team photos – mostly Habs – including two oversized of the 1967-68 and 1968-69 Canadiens, 28 1974-75 Canadiens media player photos, 99 1976-77 Canadiens media player photos (numerous duplicates) and 100 various late-1970s/early-1980s Canadiens media player photos (numerous duplicates). We also have over 60 mostly 8” x 10” 1950s/1970s portrait and action photos – many embossed “David Bier”, along with a few more oversized photos including Bobby Orr and a circa-1969 Expos photo.
As mentioned, a number of the photos have David Bier either stamped or embossed-on. The Richard photos include 11 that are post-career, with a photo from the famous Richard Riot also included. The oversized Bobby Orr colour photo features game-action early in his career (16” x 20”). The Beliveau photos include attractive portrait images (some duplication), with the oversized photos on cardboard backing to include game-action from the late-1960s, with a photo of Bobby Hull and Gump Worsley, along with an example featuring the Blues and Glenn Hall. The condition varies within the collection, with most of the 1970s media photos exhibiting light handling wear, with some of the larger oversized examples having dinged corners along with toning and the odd crease or surface wrinkle. It should also be noted that the break-down value of this desirable grouping is substantial.
