Adjective upon adjective can be used to describe this rare complete set of postcards, (and we’ll use a few), but we’ll start off simply by telling you the title the ensemble has earned at PSA: The Number One Set of All-Time. It’s fascinating to study the PSA Set Registry and Population Report, which first of all reveal that this tantalizing collection has very little competition; it is the only complete set housed in PSA holders. So scarce are Sweet Caporal postcards that just 200 total, (all players combined), have ever been submitted to PSA, with between only two and six of each player’s card showing up on the company’s pop report. Each one of these encapsulated gems is stirring to hold and admire while imagining the pre-NHL days when teams like the Quebec Bulldogs, Ottawa Senators, Renfrew Millionaires, Montreal Wanderers and the then recently-formed Montreal Canadiens did battle, writing the early chapters of professional hockey history. With an utterly impressive set rating of 5.006, the delectable extravaganza is comprised mostly of Pop-1 examples which are edged by just one other on their respective PSA “lines” (31 cards) or Pop-2s (11) with one higher. A pair of EX-MT 6s, including that of superstar Fred Cyclone Taylor of Renfrew and Ottawa’s Bruce Ridpath lead, while at EX+ 5.5 are Hall-of-Famers Georges Vezina, Paddy Moran, Joe Malone, Tom Dunderdale, Marty Walsh, Jack Marshall, Gordon Roberts, Didier Pitre and nine others. Highlighting 15 postcards at EX 5 are those picturing Art Ross, Newsy Lalonde, Bruce Stuart, Percy LeSueur, Jack Darragh, Harry Hyland, Ernie Russell, Jimmy Gardner and Jack Laviolette, the latter a Pop-2 with none higher at PSA. Completing are a trio at VG-EX+ 4.5, half a dozen VG-EX 4s and the Cleghorn brothers at Good 2. What a fabulous who’s who of early hockey legends! A perennial PSA champion, this absurdly exceptional museum-worthy jackpot will be the cornerstone of the most serious of collections. Good luck with this monumental hobby event. At the end of the auction, the set will be sold to the highest aggregate bidding, whether that is the sum of the individual lots or the highest bid for the complete set. Our website will automatically reflect whichever portion has received the highest bidding total.
