Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction June 2015
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 6/17/2015
It's the classic photo of a very young kid from Brantford named Wayne Gretzky meeting his idol, the one and only Gordie Howe, with Mr. Hockey playfully hooking a mini-stick up around the young fellow's ear. Such an iconic photo titled "The Hook", which has been shown in various magazines, books, and hockey cards for many years. But we have it with a difference! This one measures a huge 24" x 36" overall, is a print on canvas wonderfully enclosed in a wooden frame, and is signed by both Howe and Gretzky in beautiful gold paint pen. This beauty is a low limited-edition issue and is numbered "12/99" in the lower left corner where a WGA hologram also appears and with the limited-edition number on the print matching the one on the included WGA COA. Just a remarkable Howe/Gretzky signed framed display.
The frame has a few small hit marks/chips mainly all located on the corners of the frame otherwise is in excellent condition, the signatures are both clear and bold, while the print itself is in outstanding condition with no marks or flaws. The item was originally photographed at the 1972 Kiwanis "Great Men of Sports" Dinner in Brantford, Ontario when Gretzky was 12-years old.
