Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction June 2015

How do you feel about a pretty much like-new Topps hockey card bonanza? That’s the question prompted by this first-rate collection which features cards ranging mostly from NM to Mint. Yes, dozens of grading possibilities await the lucky/astute new owner, with complete sets dating back to 1973-74 and running through to ’81-82, with the exception of the ’79-80 Gretzky rookie year. Pack-fresh cards abound and we would say a majority are NM-MT or better, with not-always-perfect centering and the intermittent touched corner spotted while perusing three big binders and two boxes. Orr, Dryden, Lafleur and Gretzky cards and RCs of Smith, Barber, Potvin, Bowman, Cherry, McDonald, Salming, Trottier Bossy, Bourque, Gartner, Kurri and others are among the highlights. Duplicate near sets and insert sets are also included, with further details on our website. Taking years to assemble, this outstanding collection is just a few mouse clicks away!
A second ’74-75 ensemble is missing a Bowman RC for completion and is the one group which doesn’t mirror the rest condition-wise, with corner wear rendering the average grade in the EX neighborhood. A near set from the following year is shy three cards; Orr and two commons, while a Bourque rookie and three Gretzky cards are not in a second group of ’80-81 cards. Insert sets include two complete 22-card round corner jobs from ’76-77, a near set missing three, and a square corner set of 22 from ’77-78. The earlier inserts are prone to edge chipping on the back and do indeed have varying degrees of chipping. There are 34 stickers from ’78-79 (team logos and other hockey-related decals), with a complete set of mini team posters from ’80-81 and wrappers from ’76-77 and ’80-81 completing the Topps jackpot. Also thrown-in is a 13-card TCMA complete set from ’81-82. To note is the curvature of cards stored in an 800-count box; the ’76-77 set and the (second) groups of cards from ’75-76 and ’80-81. Nothing too drastic in our opinion but worth mentioning and to be aware of.
