Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction June 2015
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 6/17/2015
Treasures from western Canada are these intriguing and desirable little black and white cards, issued with a Paulin’s Hockey Bar, with a chance to secure a complete 70-card set a very infrequent hobby occurrence. An offer to send in a complete set to the Paulin's Chambers Company and receive either a free hockey stick or box of chocolates is outlined on the back of each card, while the fronts feature the images of men who competed in the Western Canada Hockey League - several of whom went on to star in the NHL and earn a spot in the Hockey Hall of Fame. The set here features cards which were indeed redeemed and which thus have the company’s name and “Regina Sask.” stamped on the backs. The cards exhibit considerable handling and wear, with however only ten grading Poor. Fair and Good are the dominant grades with a few making it to VG. We see one of the key cards, that picturing legendary Newsy Lalonde with Saskatoon, as a VG example, with Red Dutton’s card close. Notables G cards depict fellow Hall-of-Famers Dick Irvin and Joe Simpson, while Bill Cook and Duke Keats cards are similar but miscut. Still presentable and acceptable like most of the rest and in the F-G range are cards of Lorne Chabot, George Hay, Barney Stanley and Herb Gardiner. Among the lesser lights and P is George Hainsworth, (short and narrow due to trimming), and the two last cards; Harry Oliver and Rusty Crawford. Card backs are problem-free throughout, (no paper loss) and combine with thought-provoking photos to offer collectors an opportunity to add a scarce set to a pre-war card shrine.
