Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction June 2015
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 6/17/2015
The late Bill Barilko and deceased HOFers Turk Broda and Teeder Kennedy are among the 16 members of the 1950-51 Stanley Cup champion Maple Leafs whose autographs appear on this vintage team-signed sheet. Barilko was killed in a plane crash in the summer of 1951 after he scored the Cup-winning goal against Montreal in a final that saw all five games decided in overtime. His autograph stands out in blue ink in the middle of the 7 3/4" x 5” page with coach Primeau’s black ink fountain pen signature second from the top, and the rest in pencil, including fellow deceased HOFers Bentley and Watson.
Barilko’s plane went missing on his return from a fishing trip in the summer of 1951. His remains were not found until 1962. Others who have signed are Juzda, Meeker, Lewicki, Smith, Rollins, Klukay, Timgren, Thomson, Gardner and McCormack. The latter two signed on the bottom right portion of the page, which had been glued in a scrapbook and has tape remnants, including one in the last three letters of team captain Kennedy’s autograph at the bottom of the first column. “To Roy (or possibly Ray) from – “ is written in black ink at the top of the page above Juzda’s signature. The upper right corner is torn and there are a couple of horizontal fold creases in the middle of the page, the lower one of which passes through the top portion of Barilko’s bold autograph.
