Exceptional opportunity here to acquire not one, a couple or a few, but TEN items related to the man who donated what has become the most recognizable trophy in all of sports. Photographic images? There are five of Frederick Arthur Stanley, including a circa-1881 cabinet photo from prior to his arrival in Canada to serve as Governor General and two c. 1885 cabinet affairs from when he had returned to England and was the Earl of Derby. One of the latter two images also appears on the cover of Racing Illustrated, (June 17, 1896), while Stanley and Lady Stanley are featured on separate 1888 issues of The Dominion Illustrated during their time in Canada. A 1902 medal, still with an ancient blue ribbon, and parts of three intriguing invitations complete the remarkable ensemble, with further details available on our website.
The raised images of the Stanleys, then Earl of Derby Guild Mayor of Preston and The Countess of Derby, appear on a 1-1/4” in diameter commemorative medal with its apparent original blue ribbon still present, albeit tattered and barely intact, while parts of cardboard invitations include one commanding the Aide-de-Camp to invite a couple to dinner with the Stanleys and another asking a couple to visit “The Lady Stanley of Preston” at home. They have “1890” added to them, with a “W.C. Fowler” invited to a skating party by the Governor General and The Lady Byng of Vimy on another. The Racing Illustrated and two Dominion Illustrated publications look to have been removed from a bound volume, with the former in better condition than the latter two; the one picturing the Governor General having detached front and back pages. The earliest/smallest cabinet photo features a stirring image measuring 3-1/4” by 4-1/2”, with The Early of Derby cabinets on sturdy 10-1/2” by 12-1/2” mats and including spellbinding 6-1/2” by 8-1/2” photographs. Several possibilities with this sensational Lord Stanley collection.
