Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction June 2018
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 6/19/2018
"The Trail of the Stanley Cup" is a definite prerequisite to any important hockey library. Author Charles Coleman's three-volume history of hockey and Lord Stanley's trophy from 1893 to 1967 is contained within these three black leather-bound books which were obviously used for reference by their original owner. Though the cover of the second volume, from 1927-1946, is very damaged, its contents are complete and intact. Only 1,000 copies of this special edition of the first two books were presented to important hockey figures; the third was limited to 1,500 books. The books in this complete set are individually numbered: Volume 1 is stamped no. "845", Vol. 2 is hand-numbered "963" in blue ink, and Vol. 3 is stamped no. "963".
Volume 1, which covers 1893-1926, has blemishes to the cover and fading to the text along the spine. It comes with its original black casing with a gold-colored image of the original Stanley Cup printed on one side. The cover of Volume 2 is significantly damaged with foam and cardboard exposed on the back where parts of the leather have been cut off and torn. Several thick strands of grey tape were applied on the front and back in a jerry-rigged repair. The leather title panel is torn at the top and along the left edge where it is completely detached from the spine. There is also toning to the interior and some yellowing along edges of the endpaper. Volume 3 is in the best condition of the three and it comes with its NHL 60th anniversary leather bookmark.
