Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction June 2015
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 6/17/2015
A stirring image of Hall of Fame goaltender Charlie Gardiner in his Winnipeg Maroons uniform will appeal to many pre-war collectors, despite the Paulin’s card grade of PR 1. Gardiner was already playing with the Chicago Black Hawks when this card was issued with a Paulin’s Hockey Bar, the back of the card offering collectors a quality hockey stick or a box of chocolates in return for a complete 90-card set. This card was indeed redeemed back in the day, as evidenced by the punch hole in the lower left corner. Remarkably, there isn’t a higher-graded example at PSA, with the company’s Population Report informing of three other PR 1s and one slabbed “Authentic”. The key card in the unique ensemble, this Gardiner will be a beauty addition to a big-time pre-war encapsulated shrine.
