Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction February 2018
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 2/27/2018
Each puck originally distributed by Hockey Diversified for the 1972-74 NHL Goal Puck Program could be obtained by mail with the buyer’s choice of team and possibly player. A label was affixed to each puck listing the scorer, team and date, along with a code that divulged which team-goal said puck accounted for. Totaling 5, these particular goal pucks all originate from the 1973-74 season and were used to score goals for the Atlanta Flames. Included, we have the pucks from the Flames 23rd goal of the season scored by Ray Comeau on Nov 1st 1973, the 59th goal of the season scored by Chuck Arnason on Nov 29th 1973 (assisted on by John Stewart & Pat Quinn), 74th goal of the season by John Stewart on Dec 16th 1973 (assited by Curt Bennett & Chuck Arnason) and 82nd and 96th goals of the season by Curt Bennett, on Dec 27th 1973 (assisted by Arnie Brown & Tom Lysiak) and Jan 6th 1974 respectively.
Regarding condition, the rubberized Flames logo on the Comeau puck exhibits loss with a few streaks through the material, while the Goal Puck Program label has a few dark marks present. The rubberized Flames logo on the Arnason puck has dark marks present, while the Goal Puck Program label has a few dark rings and marks. Next, the Rubberized Flames logo on the Stewart puck exhibits some darkening, with marks present along with a small tear and loss to the Goal Puck Program label, while the Flames logo on the Bennett puck from Dec 27th has a few dark areas above and below, with heavy marks and discolouration to the Goal Puck Program label. Lastly, the Bennett puck from Jan 6th features a fairly clean NY Rangers rubberized logo along with a few marks and stains along with light toning to the Goal Puck Program label.
In 1972 founders of a company named Hockey Diversified Inc. envisioned that each puck shot into the net to produce an official goal scored in an NHL hockey game would develop a degree of intrinsic collector value for hockey fans everywhere. The founders took this idea to the NHL and procured the rights to all such NHL pucks during regular season and playoff games for a period of five years. Pucks shot into the net for a goal were collected by the referees, given to the time keepers to label and then shipped to Hockey Diversified to further label with scoring details. The pucks were then marketed to the public by Hockey Diversified Inc. Unfortunately this idea was ahead of its time and pucks sold poorly. The program lasted only two seasons, 1972-1973 and 1973-74. Hockey Diversified Inc. dissolved shortly thereafter.
