Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction Fall 2018

Fascinating treasures here were collected by consumers who would discover them when opening up a Paulin's Premium Hockey Bar, with one card accompanying each candy bar, manufactured by Winnipeg's Paulin Chambers Company. The firm had branches in other cities and the players featured toiled in the Western Canada Hockey League (1924-25) and Western Hockey League ('25-26) for such teams as the Saskatoon Sheiks, Edmonton Eskimos, Calgary Tigers, Regina Capitals, Vancouver Maroons and Victoria Cougars. A full set of cards could be redeemed for a hockey stick or box of chocolates, with submitted cards returned either stamped on the back or with a punch hole in them. Although they've long been catalogued as a 1923-24 issue, extensive research by hobby veteran and author Bobby Burrell points to a two-year promotion beginning a year later, thus giving a 1924-26 time frame for the cards. The group offered is just 13 cards shy of being complete, with #62-Red Dutton the lone big name not present and all cards featuring a scripted "Saskatoon, Sask" stamped on the back. They're low grade, with most Poor or Fair, with some making it to Good, but all intriguing to examine. Keys George Hainsworth and Newsy Lalonde of Saskatoon are heavily multi-creased and P, with teammate Bill Cook (F) displaying better and Dick Irvin (F) exhibiting less creasing. We count 17 cards that are admittedly hammered and real low grade, including 45-Keats and 70-Crawford (trimmed) but the remainder are acceptable P and F examples, highlighted by the likes of Lorne Chabot, Phat Wilson, George Hay, Barney Stanley, Bullet Joe Simpson, Herb Gardiner, Harry Oliver and still others who would later skate in the NHL. Like we said at the top, fascinating! Missing #s are 1-2-7-8-9-10-11-12-20-23-48-62-65.
