Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction Winter 2013
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 3/5/2013
Simply amazing! Offered are four original Burris Jenkins Jr. hockey cartoon drawings on vintage professional illustration board, including one featuring Rangers goalie Dave Kerr doing his best King Kong impersonation displayed in a 28" x 32" frame. The New York Journal-American illustrator was renowned for his sports-themed work in Gotham throughout the Roaring 1920s and on through the Great Depression, World War II, and the post-war boom years. Jenkins provided illustrations for the Madison Square Garden programs for New York Americans and Rangers games. These four original Burris Jenkins illustrations are hand drawn in charcoal, pencil lead and black ink. Framed “New York’s Play-off Hopes” illustration features Kerr in his Rangers goalie uniform towering over the Manhattan skyline. Ten airplanes with the surnames of Montreal Maroons players such as Conacher, Northcott, Wentworth and Blinco are cut outs that were pasted onto the artwork. The left wing and first part of Trottier’s last name are missing. The framed print has a vertical tear between the two inset illustrations at the bottom that do not diminish its display.
Lester Patrick figures prominently in "Calling on a Sick Friend", the title of one of the three other unframed original works which feature margin and editing notations. A late season meeting between the Bruins and Rangers is titled "Sound and Fury - Signifying Nothing!" and "Help!" centers on a time when both Manhattan NHL teams were in the midst of lengthy goal-scoring droughts. Each of these three boards measures approximately 18 5/8" x 22 5/8" and they all remain in great condition overall, particularly considering their vintage.
