Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction March 2010
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 3/16/2010
This bronze sculpture on a wooden base is the type of memento that members of the NHL All-Star team received for taking part in the 1979 Challenge Cup, a three game series between the top NHL and Soviet stars, played at New York’s Madison Square Garden in February of ’79 and which replaced the annual NHL All-Star Game. The faceless hockey player and wooden base combine for a height of just under 8” while engraved on the metal plaque is “Challenge Cup 1979 – NHL-USSR-NHLPA.” The sculpture has “H. Rothschild” on the back edge of the base and is screwed onto the wooden base. The Russians claimed the one and only Challenge Cup, winning games two (5-4) and three (6-0) of the series after the NHL stars had won the opener 4-2. Appealing piece from Borje Salming’s personal collection will be accompanied by his signed letter of authenticity.
