Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction Winter 2021
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 2/23/2021
A wonderfully gifted hockey player to watch on a sheet of ice, Evgeni Malkin began both his NHL and “The Cup” careers in 2006-07, winning the Calder Trophy as rookie-of-the-year and quickly giving desirability to his The Cup rookie card, the most important of his 22 different official RCs. This example of card #171 features a three-color piece of a Penguins jersey/patch and a bold, perfect blue ink autograph, with the Russian great adding his number “71” below where “34/99” is stamped in silver. Beckett has awarded an alluring mark of 9 MINT to the treasure, with the following sub grades to note: Centering 10, Edges 9, Corners 8.5 and Surface 9. Beckett population numbers meanwhile reveal that just six similar cards, at 9.5, edge this Pop 13 out of the 38 that the firm has assessed as of this writing. It’s amazing how time flies; Malkin has now played 14 NHL seasons, posting better than a point a game campaigns in all but one. A two-time NHL scoring champion, a regular season (Hart) and playoff (Conn Smythe) MVP and integral part of three Penguins’ Stanley Cup championships, “Geno” is not done yet. A terrific card awaits the high bidder here.
*We spot small light scuff to the front of the Beckett holder, near the top edge of the card and just to the right of “The Cup” logo.
