A symbol of continuity between the ancient and modern games, the Olympic flame is lit at Olympia, Greece several months before the opening of each games, which then begins the Olympic torch relay. The 1988 Olympic relay began on November 15, 1987 with Greek runner Stellos Bisbas in what has been called "the longest torch run in history". Covering a distance of 18,000 kilometers, the flame arrived in Newfoundland after its trip across the Atlantic two days later, and proceeded to travel across the country, passing through most major cities, and after an 88 day-trek, made its appearance in Calgary. We have the Olympic flame carrier used to transport the flame from Greece to Canada, and it originates from a high ranking Petro-Canada corporate executive in 1988 – with the company one of the game’s biggest sponsors. At approx 20” x 10” x 5”, the finished wooden box with brass handles at each side sports two circular compartments, with each designed to house the dual 9” brass torches. English and French plaques have been affixed atop the carrier box, with “XV Olympic Winter Games February 13-28, 1988 Calgary, Alberta, Canada” engraved.
Produced by Koehler, the brass lamps are 9” in height and contain a central glass portion for each flame, with one appearing used showing wear throughout including within the glass compartment, while the second sports just some age and storage wear. The carrier box does not contain any manufacturer’s marks or labels, with one of the portholes sporting a handwritten “F” presumably for “Flame”, housing the lit torch. There is light wear throughout including a few minor surface blemishes, with additional surface wear to the affixed plaques. It should also be noted that the high ranking executive the Olympic torch and additional items originate from went to Greece and was present for the torch lighting ceremony, and brought the flame back to Canada. He also carried the flame in one of the relay legs with Alberta Premier Ralph Klein.
