Historical Hockey Memorabilia Auction February 2018

Yes, we can imagine what some of you will be mumbling upon learning of another mega offering; “are you kidding me, 45 sets without the Gretzky rookie card?!” Yes indeed people, from one old hoarder to another blue border-loving entrepreneurial hobbyist these 1979-80 bricks will go. Ah, but how to describe the condition? Well, we can tell you that, in general, it is all over the board, and we mean all over. Now, the original “assembler” pulled the more important cards from each 395-card grouping and then sealed up the rest, hence the “brick” reference. By examining several of the “better card” groups, we discover some nice NM-or-better examples but also everything from P-F-G to VG to EX to EX-MT and so on and so forth. Some of the checklists and team checklists, the latter led by the Oilers logo which carries some weight/book value, are marked while others are unmarked. Other key/notable cards include those of legends Gordie Howe and Bobby Hull, in the twilight of their illustrious careers, and Mike Bossy’s second-year card. The rookie card lineup includes the first O-Pee-Chee cardboard appearances of Bobby Smith, Charlie Simmer, John Tonelli, Ken Linseman, Barry Melrose, Dave Semenko, Glen Hanlon, Don Maloney and others – how would you like 45 of each?! In summary, this is one huge grab bag that offers loads of possibilities – numerous Gretzky rookie card owners wouldn’t mind acquiring the rest of the set if they haven’t already done so - and one that will keep the new proprietor busy for quite some time indeed.
