Edmonton Oilers Auction 2005

This is, without a doubt, the rarest of all of Wayne Gretzky's game used sticks. A true "rookie" stick, used by Wayne while with the Edmonton Oilers of the World Hockey Association during the latter part of the 1978-79 season. This Koho Custom Pro 221 model stick is factory stamped "GRETZKY" below the knob with Wayne's number "99" marked in black high up on the shaft. The handle is taped in the manner of later Gretzky gamers, with white over the heavy black ‘bulldog" tape. Over time, the oils from the black tape have discolored the white and turned it to a light brown. The blade is bare of tape as Wayne often played without any wrapping during his first season. Nice game use with dozens of stick and puck marks along the blade and low on the shaft. Reportedly, only a dozen of these Koho twigs were produced for Wayne, and although photos exist of him using this exact model in 1979, this example is only the second we have seen offered for sale. Wayne has added a bold black signature on the shaft reading "To Rick, Best of Luck, Wayne Gretzky". The autograph style is most certainly from 1979. A true museum piece! From the personal collection of Rick "The Stick" Elaschuk with his signed letter of provenance.
