The Jean Beliveau Auction- February 2005
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 2/22/2005
It is always hard to compare eras, but the 1976-77 edition of the Montreal Canadiens is without a doubt one of the all-time best teams ever iced by the proud franchise and one whose regular season performance (60 wins, just 8 losses and 12 ties for a record 132 points) ranks among the best in the history of the NHL. Aided by linemates Pete Mahovlich and Steve Shutt, the latter rifling home 60 goals, Guy Lafleur potted 56 himself, won his second straight Art Ross Trophy and was awarded the Hart Memorial Trophy as league MVP. Backed by Dryden (Vezina trophy), Robinson (Norris), Lapointe and Savard, Montreal had an incredible goal differential of 216! This is the miniature Prince of Wales Trophy that Canadiens Vice-President and Director of Corporate Relations Jean Beliveau received for Montreal's first place finish in the Wales Conference. A silver-plated covered cup is cradled in four hockey sticks which rise up from the 2-inch high wooden base. An engraved metal plate on the base reads "H.R.M. Prince of Wales Trophy - Jean Beliveau - V.P. & D.C.R." while engraving on a plate on the opposite side includes "NHL Champions", "Montreal Canadiens" and the year. The award is in excellent condition with some tarnish marks/silver loss on the sides and lip of the cup, as well as on the "rock" that sits atop the base. From an amazing season that saw the Canadiens claim their second of 4 straight Stanley Cups as Lafleur also added the Conn Smythe to his trophy case following the Habs sweep of Boston in the finals, this fabulous piece will be accompanied by a LOA signed by Jean Beliveau.
