The Jean Beliveau Auction- February 2005
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 2/22/2005
After long being awarded to the NHL's regular season champion, the Prince of Wales Trophy became a divisional award in the first year of expansion, with the 1st place finisher in the Eastern Division claiming the towering trophy. Following their loss in the Stanley Cup finals the previous spring, the Jean Beliveau-led Montreal Canadiens finished atop the "east" with 94 points, 4 better than New York. Beliveau paced the Habs with 31 goals and 68 points and in the playoffs contributed 7 goals in 10 games as Montreal took the Stanley Cup for the 3rd time in 4 years. Team members received miniature Wales trophies. Four hockey sticks stand atop a 2-inch high wooden base and support a silver-plated cup with attached lid. An engraved metal plaque on one side of the base reads "NHL Champions - Winners 1967-68 - Club De Hockey Canadien" while the inscription on the opposite plaque is "HRH Prince of Wales Trophy - Jean Beliveau Captain". The award does show its age with overall tarnish and some silver loss in places (cup, lid) but remains a tremendous memento from a special season in NHL history. A letter of authenticity signed by Jean Beliveau will be included.
